St. Patrick’s Day is know for its debauchery and overindulgence. So for kids, what do you do to satisfy this craving to behave badly?

Sprinkle a handful of the forbidden fruit on their pancake. Dyed fructose gelatin nuggets of joy…it can’t hurt them for just one day.

Well, what do you do with the rest of the box? This mom may have eaten a few bowls over the past few days. Shhhhh.

What says love better than giving some sugar to your sugar booger?

Tips: Make a stencil by cutting heart shapes out of card stock. After you have completed your heart shaped pancake, move it to a cutting board or other surface. Sift powdered sugar over the entire pancake, peel off your stencil, and gently move to the plate with a pancake spatula. I stress “gently” because any slight movement will move or smear the powdered sugar.

Richard Scarry’s books were a favorite of mine growing up, especially What Do People Do All Day and The Funniest Storybook Ever. So much so, that my mom saved them and we have passed them on to Avery, who enjoys them as much as I did.

I could get lost for hours looking at every detail in those drawings and I still do but with the company of my own son. Poor Mr. Frumble always chasing his hat and that Bananas Gorilla is so cray cray.

Avery has also discovered the Busytown Mysteries series, which is available on Netflix. It’s fun being an adult with the theme song lyrics “Who, What, When, Where, Why, How” stuck in your head all day. Or for days. And sometime even weeks.

P.S. There is another older Richard Scarry series available on Netflix. It’s called the Busy World of Richard Scarry and is a closer adaptation of the books.

This is how one feels when awaking to the sound of a sneaky tabby using your pile of shoes as a litter box at 6 am on a Saturday. True story.

I sometimes forget we live within biking distance to the Virginia zoo, but was reminded last week when a few frantic 911 calls reporting a lion on the loose made national headlines. The lion, however, was a stylishly groomed local labradoodle named Charles the Monarch. By this time, I’m sure you’ve heard of him.

Tips: Try layering small pancakes for added depth (the one above is comprised of six).

With the unseasonably warm weather recently, this may be the only snowman we get to make. Have a merry Christmas!

Tips: When you’re done with the chocolate chips, put them back in the cupboard immediately. I made the mistake of leaving the room while Avery ate his pancake and heard the unmistakable crackling sound of the chocolate chip bag being opened. When I returned to the kitchen, I found a child with hands full and a gooey chocolate covered grin. The rest of the sugar fueled morning has been interesting…to say the least.

My son is performing in his first Christmas pageant tonight, so for the past couple weeks we’ve been rehearsing carols nonstop and Rudolph has become a favorite. Obviously. What child doesn’t enjoy singing Rudolph?

Avery and I have also hammered out a mean duet of Santa Claus is Coming to Town. I put on my best throaty Zooey voice and we complete each other’s lines. Sigh – it’s really quite charming, I must admit. But he refuses to perform it in front of anyone, so you’ll just have to take my word on it.

I may have to resort to hidden cameras.

Tips: Use one sausage patty for each antler and cut out the negative areas. Hmm…is this really a tip? I think you guys can figure it out on your own.
